Congratulations to JJKN Standout, Marshall Leipprandt
Ubly’s Leipprandt is first junior to win POY
All-Thumb Player of the Year has been an award exclusively for seniors.

Since the Thumb Sportswriters Association began handing out the award in 2005-06, it always went to a player in his final season.

That all changed this year as Ubly junior Marshall Leipprandt ascended all the way from being last year’s Sixth Player of the Year to earn the TSA’s highest honor.

Leipprandt, a 6-foot-6 power forward, adjusted his game to a new varsity coach, Ken Pichla, but didn’t miss a beat. He helped keep the Bearcats in the thick of the Greater Thumb East race until the final weeks.

“I practiced a lot, I played AAU in Bay City, and I think that really helped,” said Leipprandt. “My coach there was really good. He was able to give me tools to make my game better.”

He averaged 18.9 points per game, 7.4 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 1.7 assists and 1.0 blocks.

“Marshall lives, eats and breaths basketball,” said Pichla. “(He’s the) first player in and the last player to leave practice. (He) makes his teammates better players because of his unselfishness.”

A Leipprandt as the POY is nothing new, as his older sister, Alicia, who just completed her sophomore season at Air Force, won the girls award in 2008-09.

Alicia was in attendance during the TSA photo shoot, hosted by Bad Axe High School.

“It’s pretty cool being there with Alicia,” Leipprandt said. “She was pretty good in her time. It’s pretty cool she came home for a week for spring break and she was able to come here and my basketball banquet.”

No player has ever repeated as POY, but Leipprandt said he’s not concerned with individual honors as he prepares for his senior season.

“As a team, I would really like to win districts, because we haven’t won it since 2004,” he said. “We’ve been right there every time, so it would be nice to win that. I let things sort themselves out. It will be in the back of my head, but the main thing is winning with the team.”

JJKN Hoops Wins 7th Grade Championship

In front of a large and boisterous crowd, JJKN Hoops defeated Vassar 52-45 to claim the 2011 7th Grade Spring Championship.  With former Duke standout Christian Laettner in the house, both teams came out firing on all cylinders.   That left  a great opening impression on Laettner, who is town to run clinics and speak at the JJKN Hoops March Madness Fundraiser on Saturday night.

“I was impressed with how quickly these teams moved the ball up the court and got after it.  My thought was these teams are being coached up the right way,” stated Laettner.

Both teams jockeyed for position in the first half with neither grabbing larger than a five point lead.  The first half ended deadlocked at 31.  Colton Fabbro and Lamont Morrison each netted eight in the first half to lead Vassar while JJKN Hoops was led by Jason Russell’s nine.

The second half was decided on the defensive end as JJKN Hoops held Vassar to only 14 points while scoring 21.  Jason Russell led all scorers with 17 while Mitch Morley added 11 for JJKN Hoops.  Jonah Joppich secured seven rebounds, all in the second half to preserve the victory.

“Jonah stepped up big in the second half with his ability to rebound and be strong.  We challenged all of the kids at halftime to rebound the ball and play fundamental and focused basketball, which they did.  Vassar is going to be a great team to watch the next few years as they continue to play together but my hat is off to our team and the way they played and battled,” JJKN Hoops head coach TJ Newsham said.

Vassar was led by Tyler Humpert with nine while Morrison, Evan Wilcox, Robbie Atwood and Fabbro all added eight.  Humpert and Morrison added 11 rebounds each.
